GORILLAS VISIT KAMPALA
3rd September, 2009 - Posted by admin - 2 Comments
On Monday 31st August, Kampala residents had a chance to see dummy gorillas on the city streets.
About 50 “mountain gorillas” where on the streets of Kampala, as one of the activities to commemorate the UN international year of the gorillas.
Half of the world’s mountain Gorillas live in Uganda with over 340 gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and with the rest in Mgahinga (Uganda), Rwanda and DR Congo. The number of Mountain Gorillas is now estimated at 720 in the world.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and Ministry of Tourism are organising a grand launch of the biggest ever habituated gorilla family, which will take place on September 24 in Kisoro District, and will then be followed by national celebrations on September 26 and a fundraising gala for gorillas.
Gorillas are an endangered species and if nothing is done to protect their habitat, they will become extinct.
