Mt. Elgon has the largest volcanic base in the world with 4000km², and a surface area of (50km by 80km). This enormous mountain is shared by both Uganda and Kenya. Lying on both the Eastern border of Uganda and the Western boarder of Kenya, it’s the oldest and largest solitary, mountain in East Africa. This mountain climbing safari will give you the ultimate goal of descending into the vast 40km² caldera. Reaching the Wagagai peak on the Uganda side is an amazing experience.

Day 1: Airport Transfer from Entebbe
Arrival at Entebbe International Airport. Transfer to Victoria Hotel; a hotel with country style building overlooking Lake Victoria – the second largest fresh water lake in the world. If you arrive early, you can have an optional visit to the Zoo and the Botanical gardens of Entebbe.

Day 2: Kampala – Jinja
After breakfast, depart by road for Jinja via Kampala Uganda’s capital city. From its humble beginning to present day, old Kampala hill has extended to sit on more than ten hills. Continue having a stop over at Mabira Forest for an interesting forest walk; here you will be able to see the primates, birds and butterflies. You will continue to the source of the Nile. This is a spot where John Speke first discovered the source of the Nile River. You will continue to Jinja Nile Resort/Sunset hotel where you will be staying. In the early evening, you will relax by the side of the swimming should you wish or go to Bujagali Falls where different cultural activities take place like Acrobatic, Dances, waterfalls.

Day 3: Jinja – Mbale About 6 Hours:

Jinja is popularly known as the industrial Centre. It is Jinja that harbours the Hydro Electric Power station that serves the county’s population with its electricity requirements. A visit to the source of Victoria Nile and the Bujagali Falls makes your day. After lunch, continue to Mbale – the 3rd largest city in Uganda. Situated along a low ridge at the foot of a volcanic mountain – Mt. Nkokonjeru, which is part of the waterfalls, combined with the evergreen cultivated slope forms a very attractive background that captures your attention.

Day 4: Transfer to Mt Elgon:

After breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel and drive east to Mountain Elgon via Mbale towns. Mountain Elgon is a 4,321 metre high. Spectacular scenery is the main attraction for the hiker on this mountain with a variety of forest monkeys, small antelopes, with elephants, buffalo and about 300 bird species.

DAY 5: Sasa River Camp- Mude Cave (15.5 km). About 6 Hours:

Hiking starts in the morning. Ascend via the Sasa trail and then descend via the Piswa trail. This journey takes approximately 4 hours. From Budadiri take the trail that leads to Sasa River Camp where you climb up to Mude Cave campsite. If you are an experienced / stronger climber, you may leave Mude and continue climbing up to Jackson’s summit 4,192 m (2 hrs climb).

DAY 6: Mude Cave-Wagagai Peak-Mude Cave. (18 km) about 4 hours:

Early in the morning, hike from Mude Cave climb to Wagagai Peak (4,321 m). Later descend to Mud Camp for the night.

DAY 7: Hunters Cave Camp. (10.5km) about 3 hours

From Mude Cave descend to the Caldera and Hot Springs.

DAY 8: Piswa Patrol Hut and return to Kampala.

From the Hunter’s Cave Camp trail descend to Piswa Patrol Hut. Return to Kampala via Jinja and Mbale town.

End of 8 days Mount Elgon Hiking Safari.
